Estate History: 100 miles northeast of the Langhe, in the hamlet of Maggiora, the Vallana estate was quietly making wines to rival the Baroli of Giacomo Conterno and Bartolo Mascarello. They quickly became known by the savviest of wine collectors and were sought after all during the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Antonio Vallana’s son Bernardo crafted some of the longest-lived, elegant and ethereal wines in the appellations of Spanna, Gattinara, and Boca.
The Spanna Cantina del Camino was Bernardo’s favorite cuvee and label from a selection of 100% Spanna (Nebbiolo) that is vinified and aged longer than the normale.
"(Spanna of the fireplace) as he used to say, “a genuine wine, to enjoy with friends in front of a fireplace...”. The warmest interpretation of Spanna, with no particular reference to the pedo-climat features, but mainly focused on the expression of the wine, as a genuine expression of the winemaker in a direct relation with the consumer. In fact, the Cantina represented on the label is a picture of our “Enoteca”, where we keep a museum of all the vintages. In particular, it is a spot of the Enoteca’s fireplace. It is an invitation to come and discover our cellar. This is the reason why we decided to restore the label and dedicate it to our grandfather, re-naming it." -Bernardo Vallana.
