Tasting Notes: The vineyards for the Colombera & Garella Costa della Sesia can only be accessed using a 4x4 vehicle up a steep forest road. After the grapes are handpicked, they are brought back to the house and winery where they are fed through a small window under the kitchen to the basement cellar below. Here they are fermented in underground cement tanks from 1910 for about 12-14 days. The attention to detail is fastidious with every label applied by hand with paint brush and glue. The wines are classic Nebbiolo -  fresh, with bright red fruit, mushroom, a touch of sage and nutmeg. The wine can be drunk immediately or aged up to 5 years.

Estate History: Colombera & Garella is the project of Cristiano Garella, a leading consultant for several properties, along with his long-time friend Giacomo Colombera, who has been growing grapes in Bramaterra and Cosata della Sesia since the early 1990s. This property has quickly become one of the gems in Alto Piemonte. Bramaterra is truly microscopic, with only a handful of vignaioli producing it. Coste della Sesia, while still small, is a broader 33-hectare appellation. Both appellations are Nebbiolo dominant, but the wines are always blended with various amounts of Croatina, Vespolina and Uva Rara depending on the vintage. The soils here are volcanic porphyry, a type of granite rich in minerals. The style of the Colombera & Garella is very traditional resulting in lighter wines with clean aromatics and bright acidity.
