Tasting notes: In 1978, Castello di Ama began an extensive research into the terroir of their own vineyards. They identified La Casuccia as one of their finest sites. It was divided into nine parcels, each with their own unique terroir. Beginning with its inaugural 1985 vintage, this wine blends three of Casuccia’s best parcels of Sangiovese and Merlot, using vines both old and young. With its meticulous aging process–40% of the wine sees 14 months in new oak barrique, 60% spends those 14 months in one year old barrels–it marries traditional Chianti Classico to modern winemaking. This wine is energetic and explosive on the palate. Pipe tobacco, leather, and flint meet ripe, espresso-laden tannins, plush morello cherry, and red plum preserves. This rare Gran Selezione can be enjoyed now or cellared for decades.
Estate History: Castello di Ama sits 12 miles northeast of Siena in the hills of Gaiole. This is the heart of Chianti Classico, a bucolic rolling landscape of woods, vineyards and olive groves. The property is owned and operated by the husband and wife team of Marco Pallanti and Lorenza Sebasti. Over the last quarter century they have replanted all of the vineyards and upgraded all of the winemaking capabilities to make this one of Tuscany’s showcase producers.
