Tasting Notes: Flos is a pure Syrah that bursts with energy and brightness, grown on steep, sun-drenched soils. Its vibrant character leaps from the glass, with lively acidity complementing a core of juicy red fruit. Ripe cherry notes blend seamlessly with subtle herbal undertones, creating a wine that is both fresh and expressive. Balanced and fruit-forward, it offers depth without heaviness, making it a dynamic and approachable expression of Syrah perfect for the table.
Estate History: Tucked between the rugged Apuan Alps and the Apennine mountains, Garfagnana is a storied borderland in today’s Lucca province. This remote corner of Tuscany is home to one of the region’s highest-elevation vineyard sites—once a proud viticultural area, left largely untended in the aftermath of World War II.
In 1999, after years of running his family’s traditional osteria, Gabriele da Prato began a quiet revolution. Determined to restore Garfagnana’s winemaking heritage, he founded a tiny winery rooted in biodynamic principles—long before certification was even considered. Today, the estate proudly holds Demeter certification, a testament to da Prato’s deep respect for the land.
The Serchio River, which da Prato fondly calls Garfagnana’s “little Rhône,” lends a tempering influence to the vineyards, where dramatic diurnal shifts are softened by ancient stone terraces that store and radiate the day’s warmth. The soils here are a treasure: a mosaic of sandstone and shale formed from the remnants of a prehistoric lake, nourishing old vines that thrive in their complexity.
In a twist of history, the French varietals found here—most notably Syrah—are considered indigenous. Introduced to the region by Napoleon’s sister Paulina, they’ve taken deep root over generations. Today, da Prato crafts a Syrah that speaks of both place and past, capturing the soul of Garfagnana in every bottle.
