Tasting Notes: Monte dei Ragni is a tiny jewel of an estate producing miniscule amounts of world-class wines in the Veneto. Working organically and biodynamically, the Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore has the richness and depth you would expect but with a grace and elegance that rivals Quintarelli. The wine offers an intense, complex bouquet of ripe red fruits, specifically wild berries and black cherries, with additional layers of spice and tobacco. On the palate, this is a robust, full-bodied, and highly structured wine, delivering a velvety texture and a harmonious balance of savory notes, good acidity, and well-integrated tannins, culminating in a long, persistent finish.
Estate History: The Monte dei Ragni estate is a small, family-run winery located on steep slopes in the historic Marega area of Fumane, within the heart of the Valpolicella Classica zone. The name "Monte dei Ragni" (Hill of the Spiders/Ragno family) comes from a 19th-century land registry notation, and the Ragno family has been cultivating this land for generations. Today, the estate is meticulously led by Zeno Zignoli, who works the small, 7-hectare vineyard with a deep commitment to permaculture, biodynamic principles (though uncertified), and minimal intervention winemaking, even utilizing a horse for plowing to avoid soil compaction. Zeno integrates olive and cherry trees, grains, and livestock among the vines to promote biodiversity, considering monoculture a disaster, and produces a very limited number of highly sought-after, authentic bottles that are a true expression of the land and his philosophy.
