Tasting Notes: Though Friuli is known as Italy’s white wine destination, it’s no slouch in the red department, either. Merlot is the region’s red calling card. Schiopetto pays the grape a delicious homage, blending it with a dash of a Cabernet Sauvignon for added structure and longevity. It ages in a mix of 225L and 500L barrels, and another year in bottle for release. This wine is plush, velvety, with notes of black cherry, cassis, green pepper, and tobacco.

Estate History: The Schiopetto winery's history traces back to 1970, when Mario was offered the chance by the church to lease the vineyards encircling the Archbishop’s Palace at Capriva del Friuli. Mario undertook a comprehensive revitalization of the vineyards, eventually acquiring them as his own in 1989. He dedicated himself to cultivating vineyards of distinction, capitalizing on the unique qualities of the Ponca terroir, characterized by clay and limestone soil. Over time, his children, Maria Angela, Carlo, and Giorgio, joined him in overseeing the enterprise, upholding their father’s legacy and enthusiasm. Mario notably pioneered the first "Tocai" and introduced modern white wine from Friuli.
Mario pioneered the implementation of cutting-edge technologies and groundbreaking methods in farming and winery operations. His legacy inspires the Rotolo family, who took over in April 2014, to maintain his vision. They are dedicated to upholding Mario's values, including eco-friendly practices like forest planting to offset CO2, using sustainable products, and utilizing advanced boilers for heating, powered by vineyard wood and clippings.
