Tasting Notes: The 2009 Romano Dal Forno Amarone della Valpolicella is a monumental and full-bodied wine that offers a complex melange of dark fruit, chocolate, and spice. The nose is an enticing blend of black cherry, prune, and fig, with nuances of mocha, licorice, and exotic cedar wood. On the palate, it is powerful and rich, displaying concentrated flavors of dried blackberry, tar, and forest floor, framed by mouthwatering acidity and velvety, yet firm, tannins that suggest a long future for this harmonious wine.
Estate History: The Dal Forno family has been involved in viticulture for four generations, but the modern winery was established in 1983 by Romano Dal Forno, who was inspired by a formative encounter with the "maestro of Valpolicella," Giuseppe Quintarelli. The estate is located in Val d'Illasi, where Romano implemented a philosophy of maniacal attention to detail, extremely low yields, and a blend of traditional methods in the vineyard with modern techniques in the cellar. He famously replaced the traditional Molinara grape with Croatina and Oseleta for better color, tannin, and complexity, and was an early adopter of new French oak barriques for aging, helping to craft a unique, highly concentrated, and globally renowned style of Amarone that stands as a benchmark for quality.
