Tasting Notes: The Monte dei Ragni Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a profound and concentrated red wine, offering a complex bouquet where initial dark fruit aromas of blackberry and ripe plum are beautifully interwoven with earthy, savory, and balsamic herbal notes. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and powerful yet remarkably elegant, delivering a rich texture and a precise, structured tannic backbone. The flavor profile is defined by layers of spice and dark cherry, culminating in a exceptionally long, persistent, and satisfying finish that speaks to its meticulous craftsmanship and high quality.
Estate History: The Monte dei Ragni estate is a small, family-run winery located on steep slopes in the historic Marega area of Fumane, within the heart of the Valpolicella Classica zone. The name "Monte dei Ragni" (Hill of the Spiders/Ragno family) comes from a 19th-century land registry notation, and the Ragno family has been cultivating this land for generations. Today, the estate is meticulously led by Zeno Zignoli, who works the small, 7-hectare vineyard with a deep commitment to permaculture, biodynamic principles (though uncertified), and minimal intervention winemaking, even utilizing a horse for plowing to avoid soil compaction. Zeno integrates olive and cherry trees, grains, and livestock among the vines to promote biodiversity, considering monoculture a disaster, and produces a very limited number of highly sought-after, authentic bottles that are a true expression of the land and his philosophy.
