Tasting Notes: The Monte Maletto Canavese Nebbiolo is lifted and ethereal, from 95% Nebbiolo and 5% Ner d’Ala, which is a virtually extinct grape from the neighboring Valle d’Aoste. Bright, savory cherry fruit pings the palate with zip and authority while in the background hints of pine, leather and smoke emerge. The finish is long, sharp and resonant.
Estate History: Monte Maletto winemaker Giano Marco Viano worked as a sommelier in Glasgow and London before coming home to Carema. With only 16 hectares under vine, the Carema DOCG, located an hour north of Turin on the Piedmont border with the Valle d’Aosta, is one of Italy’s smallest. There are only a handful of producers, working steeply terraced vineyards that surround the town of Carema, population 800. This appellation produces Nebbiolo-based reds and unique white wines from the local Erbaluce grape.
