Tasting Notes: The Iuli Natalin is 100% Grignolino grown in the Montaldo di Cerrina Monferrato section of Piemonte. Natalin was the nickname of Gioacchino Natale, the grandfather of winemaker Fabrizio Iuli. Grignolino was Natalin’s favorite wine and Fabrizio was able to replant the original vineyard where his grandfather grew his grapes. This organically-grown wine is deceptively light yet incredibly complex with aromatic notes of tobacco, black tea and wild herbs all seemingly macerated with brambly red fruits and a hint of fresh tilled soil. The perfect wine for a formaggi and salumi board.
Estate History: Iuli is in the far north of Monferrato, Piemonte, in the town of Montaldo di Cerrina. This tiny town of 92 people counts only one winemaker to their number, town native Fabrizio Iuli. Fabrizio cultivates his vineyards with his wife Summer and their two small boys. Their vineyards are in the lower Monferrato around the villages of Cerrina Monferrato, Odalengo, Sala Monferrato and Quarti di Pontestura and are mostly planted to old-vine Barbera in interesting micro-climates that share the same white calcareous clay soils that make these wines so distinctive. Only native yeasts are used, no fining or filtering and as little sulfur added as possible. The vineyards are certified organic, as this somewhat forgotten area of Piemonte has never ‘modernized’ and used chemicals in the vineyard.
