Tasting Notes: Murru is from old-vine Monica grapes grown in the wild mountains of Sardegna. In the glass it opens with a spice-box array of nutmeg, white pepper, cardamom, and mint. The fruit is dense with hints of cooked plums, black cherry, and a hint of lavender.
Estate History: I Garagisti di Sorgono is a micro-winery from Sardegna that is inspired by the Vins de Garage movement that begain on the Right Bank of Bordeaux in the 1980’s. At that time some of the best winemakers from Saint-Émilion decided to put the strict rules of the appellation system aside to make incredibly rich, ripe wines, full-bodied and powerful.
I Garagisti is located smack-dab in the center of Sardegna, in the mountains between Barbagia and Campidano in an area known as Mandrolisai. Childhood friends Renzo Manca, Simone Murru, Andrea Macis and Pietro Uras farms vines of Monica, Muristeddu and Cannonau that were planted some 60 to 80 years ago by their grandparents. Make no mistake, these wines are not quiet. Powerfully dense, dark in color and high in alcohol, almost like an Amarone but from the quiet rusticity of Sardegna, these are red wines are impossible to ignore. Their efforts to make these brazen, bold wines has not gone unnoticed with various medals from Decanter in recent years and most importantly, being listed as one of Top-100 wines of Italy.
