Tasting Notes: The color of the I Clivi Schioppettino is brilliant ruby red with a moderate transparency. The nose reveals scents of cherry and strawberry, with a slight peppery-spiciness. Medium in body, the i Clivi Schioppettino shows prominent acidity and a delicacy reminiscent of red-fruit pulp.
Winemaker Mario Zanusso's idea is to craft a red wine consistent with the character of Ribolla Gialla (Schioppettino is also known as Ribolla Nera). This red, therefore, plays on acidity, salinity, moderate alcohol (12.5%), with a seducing strawberry color and a touch of spicy, peppery notes under the nose.
2019 is the first vintage, even thought Mario has been thinking about making this wine for a long time. The 50-year-old Schioppettino grapes come from a south-east facing slope in Prepotto, which historically is the best cru for this variety. Prepotto is located in the Province of Udine.
Estate History: I Clivi founder Ferdinando Zanusso was raised in the world of wine, his father made wine for his tavern in Treviso, in Friuli-Venezia-Giulia. After travelling and spending time in Paris, Ferdinando purchased a vineyard in Friuli in 1996 and soon after his son Mario, now at the helm of the estate, joined him. Vineyards are all worked by hand, dry farmed and certified organic, with vines from 50 to 80 years old.
