Tasting Notes: Vino Rosso Artigiano is a classic Etna blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappucio and is unusual by the timing of its harvest(s!). A third of the grapes are harvested early, while their acidity is still bracingly high. Another third is harvested when ripe. The final portion is harvested late, when the grapes have begun to dehydrate, and their sugars have started to concentrate. It spends ten months aging in tonneaux. This red is fleshy, with notes of red berries, smoke, balsamic, and cocoa.
Estate History: Founded in 2008 by visionary Davide Bentivegna, Etnella produces wines that are deeply terroir driven. He works just 9 hectares of vines, scattered across Etna’s eastern slopes. All his wines are spontaneously fermented—using the local yeast present on the grape skins to kickstart fermentation, rather than mass-produced winemaker’s yeast.
