Tasting Notes: The Colleoni "Selvarella" Sangiovese is a deep, vibrant, and expressive Tuscan red, offering notes of purple plum, cranberry, and sweet herbs alongside hints of licorice, truffle, and pomegranate. On the palate, the wine is enveloping and warm, featuring a lush texture and a pleasing dusting of chewy, rustic tannins that balance the fresh acidity and pure fruit character. A lingering finish of bitter cherry, strawberry, and kirsch evokes the sensuous elements of the Tuscan countryside, making it a powerful yet polished example of Montalcino Sangiovese.
Estate History: The Colleoni family's winemaking journey began unexpectedly after Marino and his wife Luisa purchased an old property outside Montalcino in 1993. While on an evening walk a couple of years later, they discovered a forgotten patch of ancient vines growing amidst dense scrub, prompting them to clear the land and restore the vineyard terraces. The couple embraced organic viticulture from the outset, aiming for a natural balance in the vineyard. Their first harvest occurred in 2000, leading to the creation of highly regarded, site-specific wines that reflect the unique northern exposure, high altitude, and marl soils of their property.
