Tasting Notes: These 90 year old vines are harvested in early October. Maceration lasts between 8 and 10 days, followed by spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel. Aged in used French oak for 2.5 years.
Estate History: The Company Camarda was founded in the early '60s in Passopisciaro, a district of Castiglione di Sicilia, in the areas of Feudo di Mezzo and Porcaria. It is placed between the Volcano Etna and the Alcantara Valley, at the foot of the Nebrodi mountains. The vineyards, situated at an altitude of 650 meters on drystone walls terraces, are cultivated with different systems: “Piede franco ad alberello” (Alberate) and – partly – with“Spalliera” (Espalier). The variety of grapes is that of Nerello Mascalese, with few plants of Cappuccio, and it is cultivated in the ancient tradition passed down from father to son, that is by using only sulphur and copper sulphate. The pruning, the ploughing, the tying and the harvesting take place exclusively manually, as the ancient tradition wants. The result of this work, made with passion and commitments, is an excellent product whose fermentation occurs spontaneously with“native” yeasts till the refining process, which takes place inside used oak barriques. The Camarda product is a jubilation of flavours, arising from the embrace between the Etna and the Alcantara Valley, and from the ancestral peasant's fatigue.
