Tasting Notes: The Broccardo Langhe Nebbiolo Il Già-Pi opens with aromas of raspberries, blueberries and wild strawberries. Structured with well-integrated tannins on the palate, this is a surprisingly good match for spicy food. The wine is 100% Nebbiolo from 25 year old vines planted in Monforte d’Alba, Barolo and Novello. The vineyards face south, south-west, and the soil is sandy clay/silt. The grapes are hand-harvested at the beginning of October. Fermentation is carried at 78F (26°C) in stainless steel tanks, with a 10-15 day maceration. Malolactic fermentation takes place in November. The wine is then aged an average of 10 months in new to 10 year old 35hl  tonneaux (Slavonian and French oak), and rests a minimum of 10 months in bottle before release.

Estate History: The Broccardo estate has been in the family since 1900 and is currently in the hands of the third generation, Federica (who works in the cellar and in the vineyards), Filippo (the winemaker) and Laura, who is the de facto export manager. With great respect for the land, they work together to cultivate the vineyards in a sustainable fashion and they carry the vinification in the same spirit, with minimal intervention. They aim to produce wines that speak for the terroir they come from.

Their vineyards are located in three renowned comuni of the Langhe, Monforte d’Alba, Barolo and Novello, suited to the production of Barolo DOCG, Langhe DOC Nebbiolo, Barbera d’Alba DOC, Dolcetto d’Alba DOC and Langhe DOC Rosato. The vineyards comprise 13 hectares that face south and southwest. The soil composition there is characterized by clay, tuff, sand, and silt left by the withdrawal of the Padano Sea about 16 million years ago. The alternation of these layers gives their wines finesse, structure and elegance. The wine cellar is located in Monforte d’Alba, which became a UNESCO world heritage site in 2014.
