Tasting Notes: Rosso Arcaico is a blend of both Aleatico and Grechetto Rosso fermented spontaneously in terracotta. Notes of tart crunchy cranberries, black licorice, and thyme. Elegant in body but still full in flavor Rosso Arcaico is perfect with a slight chill.
Estate History: Andrea Occhipinti is a winemaker working in Lazio with native grapes of the region, the red grapes Aleatico - thought to be related to Moscato - Grechetto Rosso, and the white grape Procanico, aka Trebbiano Toscano. Aleatico was traditionally made into sweet wines, since it has a bright berry palate and soaring aromatics. Andrea went a different course, noting that when the wine is vinified to dryness it shares much of the same qualities as Sangiovese. Working his 4 hectares of organic vineyards planted on the volcanic slopes of Lake Bolsena, Europe's largest volcanic lake, Andrea crafts lifted, elegant reds, distinct and elegant rosato, and an authentic and unique white wine. These are peerless and perfect spring wines, savory and impossible to put down.
