Tasting Notes: Gobbio is the name of a hill in the center of the Botticino amphitheater of hills, about 400 meters above sea level. Unlike on the other hills, the famous “Botticino Classico” marble is not quarried here, since the stone crumbles. The distinctive, unique terrain is rich in marl (limestone and clay), calcium carbonate, silt and sand, central to the personality of this wine. Moderately bold with silky tannins, this wine has a ruby red color, with intense and persistent notes of black fruits, vanilla and pepper.
Estate History: One of the first zones to be awarded DOC status, Botticino is more likely to be known for its stone than its wine: Botticino marble is in famous locations including Grand Central Station and the White House. Vines struggle to grow, sending roots deep through the topsoil into the cracks between slabs of underground marble. Today, there are only 42 hectares still in production, 18 of those by Pierangelo Noventa, his daughter Alessandra and her husband Cristiano. Pierangelo focuses on each unique plot’s characteristics, even bottling for many years based on soil types.
