Tasting Notes: Montevertine, located in the heart of Chianti Classico, in the municipality of Radda in Chianti, is nowadays certainly famous among Sangiovese enthusiasts for labels such as Pian del Ciampolo, Montevertine and, obviously, Pergole Torte but not everyone knows that Sergio Manetti, in the early 1980s, also created a wine exclusively for the Enoteca Pinchiorri in Florence which was initially called Sodaccio di Montevertine and then, a few years later, Cannaio. The wine owes its name to a small vineyard (0.2 ha) that Manetti planted in 1982 next to Pergole Torte but in a slightly cooler area full of Canaiolo grapes (hence Canneto) from where, only in the best years, the best Sangiovese grapes were harvested which, together with a few bunches of Canaiolo and, subsequently, Colorino, had the aim of recreating a "small" Pergole Torte produced only in very limited quantities (one or two barriques at most).
This wine which had never been marketed was only produced in 1983, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2001 and 2004. Montevertine Il Cannaio 1995 is intense and rich in hints of aromatic herbs and spices.
