Tasting Notes: The Brezza Barolo Sarmassa Vigna Bricco is known for complex aromas of new leather, camphor, dried herbs, and pipe tobacco, which mingle with notes of ripe dark-skinned berries and a whiff of blue flower or dried rose. The palate is firmly structured, revealing flavors of raspberry compote, Morello cherry, and licorice, all supported by a backbone of noble, compact tannins and bright acidity. It is an elegant, full-bodied wine that is both powerful and balanced, with a long, savory, earthy finish that suggests significant aging potential.
Estate History: The Brezza family has owned and operated their winery and vineyards since 1885. The estate, which also includes a hotel and restaurant, is located adjacent to the small town of Barolo. Giacomo Brezza, with his father Antonio, produced the first bottled wine from the estate in 1910. Today, the fourth generation, led by Enzo Brezza, manages the property, upholding a traditional winemaking philosophy that includes organic viticulture (certified as of 2015), spontaneous fermentations, and aging exclusively in large, untoasted Slavonian oak casks. This approach allows the unique characteristics of their single vineyards, or crus, to be transparently expressed in the finished wines.
