Despite its fierce appearance, this large, active volcanic mountain on the northeastern side of Italy's southern island, Sicilia, provides very inviting conditions for grape growing. In fact, Mount Eta is slowly becoming one of Italy’s — and Europe’s—most exciting wine producing regions. Etna DOC wines, under strict guidelines for certification, are made exclusively with grapes grown on the outlying slopes of Mount Etna. Even though the terraced vineyards at these altitudes are no easy feat to navigate, winemakers simply can’t resist the unique characteristics the Etna terroir offers. The reds are a blend of native Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio grapes, and the whites are at least 60% Carricante with smaller amounts of various other local varieties.
