Tasting Notes: Volgar 2018 expresses notes of wild fennel, citrus peel, and brine. The body is a bit fuller than previous years but generous with fruit flavors.
Estate History: Peter Dipoli is a talented winemaker in Alto Adige, producing exceptional wines in this mountainous region. Through extensive research, Peter found that the high-altitude slopes near Bolzano are perfect for complex, age-worthy wines. He replaced the local red Schiava with Sauvignon Blanc, which thrives in the long growing season, achieving ripeness and maintaining acidity for aging. His Voglar Sauvignon Blanc, grown on steep limestone slopes and aged in acacia casks, showcases exotic fruit and minerality.
Peter also identified a milder zone with clay and limestone soils, ideal for Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. These reds benefit from longer hang time, ensuring optimal fruit maturity without vegetal flavors. His Iugum, aged two years in barriques and two in bottle, is a complex, age-worthy red that reflects Alto Adige's terroir. Both approachable young and suitable for aging, it demonstrates Peter's artistry and the region's unique potential, making him one of northern Italy's great, yet largely undiscovered, talents. In recent times he has appointed his nephew Felix to take lead in vineyards and the cellar. Felix has been following in the steps of his uncle closely but also bringing in a fresh and new point of view to the wines.
