Tasting Notes: Il Cancelliere produces low-intervention wines, guided gently by estate founder Soccorso Romano. Their Irpinia Aglianico, like all their wines, is aged in old oak. Beneath an intoxicating nose of cocoa, black cherry, Mediterranean herbs, and wild blackberries, this wine boasts firm tannins and a tantalizingly long finish.

Estate History: Il Cancelliere is a family operated winery in the comune of Montemarano in Campania situated on clay and limestone soils. Montemarano is known for producing illustrious Aglianico grapes, which are famously used in the production of Taurasi wines. Soccorso Romano and his wife Pasqualina oversee the winery but have assistance from their son Enrico who brings his agronomic knowledge to the table and daughter Nadia Panetta, who handles the marketing.

They trust upon the art of minimalism and do only what is necessary for the production of their wines, which excludes the acts of adding sulfur, finning, or filtering. They use organic grapes and ferment using only native yeast. The Ramano family's objective is to bring us closer to the pure expression of the grape and to enjoy wines as their ancestors once did with a farmer style wine-making method. Aglianico is by nature high in tannin and acid, usually to be tamed by age or oak.

Il Cancelliere only produces three wines, all from which are made with Aglianico. The wine we are highlighting from this vineyard is their Aglianico IGT. The wine is produced from grapes of their youngest vines (15-years-old), stainless steel fermented, and steel aged for up to a year. The results give us a taste of the unadulterated grape.
