Tasting Notes: The Torrione wine is a blend of the grapes of all the vineyards of Petrolo: 80% Sangiovese from Bòggina, 15% Merlot from Galatrona, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon from Campo Lusso. The wine is vinified naturally with native yeasts in concrete vats. It is then aged in wood spontaneously with malolactic fermentation. Matured in concrete tanks, then transferred from 40 HL French Oak barrel to tonneaux and completed in barriques over the course of 15-18 months. Torrione exhibits bright perfume on the nose with sweet red berries, and fresh flower aromas. On the palate the wine is full-bodied with integrated tannins. Notes of leather cherry, eucalyptus, and herbs de Provence.
Estate History: Petrolo was founded by Lucia Bazzocchi Sanjust in 1988 along with the help of legendary wine consultant Giulio Gambelli. The estate has been in the Val d’Arno Sopra in Tuscany since the mid 1980’s and became well known all around. Thanks to its owner and the story of the estate, Petrolo has become the definition of a cult winery.
