Tasting Notes: The Sergio Arcuri Aris Ciro Superiore is from Gaglioppo vines that are between 66 and 34 years old. The color is typical of Gaglioppo, ruby red with streaks of orange. Aromas of licorice, anise and prune first come out of the glass, but with some air dark, brambly red fruit is coaxed out.
Estate History: Sergio Arcuri is a trailblazing winemaker in Calabria making incredibly sophisticated and deeply interesting wines, though in miniscule quantity, from the Gaglioppo and Greco Bianco grapes in the heart of Calabria. Sergio is a fourth-generation grower in Calabria. His great-grandfather, Giuseppe, has farmed grapes since at least 1880. Sergio’s father, Joseph, opened the winery back in 1973 after his own father had ceased operations. Sergio, alongside his brother Francisco, modernized the equipment and began to envision making wines that would appeal to consumers outside of the immediate region. The wines are a revelation, wines that demonstrate the history, style and terroir of the land and show both the past and what the future has in store for Calabria.
