Tasting Notes: Calmarossa boasts a vibrant ruby red hue, accented with delicate purple undertones. Its bouquet is both rich and refined, featuring an intense fragrance of roses and wild violets interwoven with fruity notes of cherry and raspberry. This aromatic profile is further enhanced by hints of cinnamon and earthy nuances, complemented by subtle tones of graphite, cocoa, and licorice.
Estate History: High above sea level, at an impressive 1,100 meters on the northwestern slope of a volcano, lies one of Europe’s highest vineyards, encircled by ancient lava flows. For 15 years, Sonia Spadaro Mulone of Santa Maria La Nave has dedicated herself to selecting ancient, ungrafted vines, nurturing the remarkable Grecanico Dorato. This effort culminates in an exquisite monovarietal, called Millesulmare, a wine that harmoniously blends mountain and volcanic influences with a touch of sea fragrance.
On the southeastern slope, at 800 meters above sea level, an incredibly steep ancient crater of Mount Etna cradles a cherished vineyard of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. With vines dating back to pre-phylloxera times, this unique terroir produces Calmarossa, an authentic Etna Rosso DOC. This refined wine is rich in minerals and boasts a distinctive volcanic character.
This relentless pursuit of the perfect grape leads to meticulously managed vine yields, maintaining them at about 800 grams per plant. Careful cultivation results in a limited production of numbered bottles, showcasing deep respect for Mount Etna’s winemaking heritage. With less than one bottle per vine, these wines embody the essence of tradition and the unparalleled terroir of this majestic volcano.
