Tasting Notes: Bright, ripe red fruits with earthy elements make this savory red a fantastic partner at the dinner table. The Guastaferro Irpinia Aglianico Memini has a brilliant spicy edge, with lip-smacking cherry fruit, notes of exotic spices and a silky texture on the palate. The estate has some of the most incredible vines, aged up to 200 years, trained upwards into a giant tree like pergola.
Estate History: Raffaele Guastaferro has been making Taurasi DOCG wines since 2003 from a two-hectare plot of 200-year-old, pre-phylloxera vines. The fruit from the vineyard Piano d’Angelo, was sold to other winemakers before 2003 and was the source of Mastrobeardino's famed 1968 Taurasi Piano d’Angelo. Raffaele understood the incredible value and rarity of these vines and began his own family label. These vines were planted using a very old technique of intertwining multiple shoots to form a massive 10-foot-tall pergola, looking more like a grove of trees than a vineyard. The incredible vine age adds a soft, pliant richness and complexity not often found in Aglianico based wines.
