Tasting Notes: The Barolo Perno 2019 is a refined and chiseled expression of the long, cool 2019 growing season. It presents a captivating bouquet of red cherry, forest floor, and black olive, which gradually gives way to deeper layers of crushed raspberry, truffle, and licorice. On the palate, the wine is defined by its traditional structure and savory saline finish, with firm but balanced tannins that ensure excellent poise. Having spent 44 months in large Slavonian oak botti, it displays a characteristic Monforte grit tempered by a charmingly austere mineral tension.
Estate History:The Cascina Disa estate, located in the village of Monforte d'Alba, has been home to the Sandri family since the late 19th century, though vines were first cultivated on these steep slopes by monks as early as the 15th century. Giovanni Sandri founded the modern winery in the early 1960s, and his son, Elio Sandri, took the helm in the 1990s, shifting the focus from selling grapes to bottling estate-grown wines. Today, Elio works alongside his children, Luna and Riccardo, managing seven hectares of vineyards with a strictly traditional and non-interventionist philosophy. The estate is celebrated for its commitment to organic practices and its exceptionally patient approach, often releasing its wines years later than other producers in the region to ensure they have achieved optimal balance and depth.
