Estate History: Castello Romitorio is a historic 12th-century fortress located in the cooler, high-altitude hills of northwestern Montalcino. Abandoned for decades, the dilapidated estate was purchased in 1984 by the visionary Italian transavantgarde artist Sandro Chia, who meticulously restored the castle and planted pristine Sangiovese vineyards up to 480 meters above sea level. Today, his son Filippo Chia manages the winery, combining organic farming practices with a commitment to capturing the raw, wild terroir of their schist-rich soils. Under their guidance, the estate has risen to international prominence, celebrated for producing some of the most elegant, structured, and artfully crafted wines in Tuscany.
