Tasting Notes: This wine captures the essence of the Montosoli hill with a striking aromatic profile of wild strawberry, lavender, and crushed stones. On the palate, it displays a remarkable sense of verticality and precision, balancing succulent red cherry and blood orange fruit with a distinct saline minerality. The structure is defined by fine-grained, chalky tannins and a vibrant freshness that drives a long, savory finish of black tea and dried herbs. It is an elegant and deeply transparent expression of Sangiovese that prioritizes mineral clarity and tension over sheer power.
Estate History: Canalicchio di Sopra was founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti, who was among the original twelve founders of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino. Located in the cooler, northern reaches of the appellation, the estate spans two primary crus: Canalicchio and Montosoli. Since the 1990s, the winery has been managed by the Ripaccioli family, who have transitioned the estate toward a more plot-specific approach to winemaking. Today, the third generation, led by Francesco Ripaccioli, maintains a reputation for producing classically styled Brunellos that emphasize the unique galestro soils and microclimates of their historic vineyards.
