Tasting Notes: The 2021 Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello opens with a vibrant and expressive bouquet of marasca cherry, crushed raspberries, and wild strawberries, layered over delicate floral notes of violet and lavender. The palate is defined by a remarkable purity of fruit and a crystalline mineral core that provides lift and energy. Savory undertones of Mediterranean herbs, black tea, and orange peel add complexity to the medium-to-full body. Finely woven, silky tannins provide a sophisticated structure, leading into a long, persistent finish characterized by freshness and a sense of place.
Estate History: Founded in 1962 by Primo Pacenti, Canalicchio di Sopra was a pioneer in the region and one of the twelve founding members of the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino. Located in the cooler, northern reaches of the appellation, the estate is defined by its two distinct vineyard sites: Canalicchio, which contributes power and clay-driven richness, and Montosoli, known for its marl soils that provide elegance and verticality. Now managed by the third generation of the family, Francesco Ripaccioli and his siblings continue the tradition of crafting classic, terroir-driven wines that emphasize the unique microclimates of their historic hillsides.
