Tasting Notes: In the glass the first sensation is scents of ripe cherry and plum with balsamic and powdered chocolate in the background. This dense palate has oak hints intertwined with mint, tobacco and red currants. Incredible balance of fine tannins and acidity mark this as a wine that will enjoy a long aging period but the ripe fruit present means there is much to enjoy now.
Estate History: Arnaldo Caprai is a renowned Italian winery located in Montefalco, Umbria, that has played a pivotal role in reviving and elevating the reputation of the Sagrantino grape.
Founded in 1971 by Arnaldo Caprai, a successful textile entrepreneur, the winery was initially focused on producing high-quality wines from local grape varieties. However, it is particularly noted for its contribution to the resurgence of Sagrantino, a native varietal that was almost forgotten before Caprai helped bring it back to prominence.
Today, under the leadership of Arnaldo’s son Marco Caprai, the winery is recognized for producing some of the finest Sagrantino di Montefalco wines. These wines are known for their deep, complex character, rich tannins, and potential for aging. In addition to Sagrantino, the winery produces other wines such as Montefalco Rosso, a blend that often includes Sangiovese, and other Umbrian varietals like Grechetto.
Caprai has been a pioneer in sustainability in Italian viticulture, using modern technologies and eco-friendly practices to reduce the environmental impact of their wine production. Their wines have received international acclaim, helping to put both Sagrantino and the Montefalco region on the map for wine enthusiasts worldwide.
